Правительство Японии объявило о начале создания уникальной системы, которая призвана с достаточной точностью предсказывать тайфуны, сильные снегопады, резкие повышения температуры и другие атмосферные стихийные бедствия на 20-30 лет вперед.

Ее ключевым элементом станет суперкомпьютер Earth Simulator, работающий со средней скоростью 5 триллионов вычислений в секунду.

Он расположен в Институте Земли в городе Иокогама и состоит из 5120 процессоров, которые занимают площадь 50 на 65 метров.

Используя "Земной симулятор", японские специалисты намерены в конечном итоге создать систему предсказания погоды с точностью до 4 кв. км на всей поверхности планеты.
